More Information
This charming chalk drawing of a girl seen from the back was first attributed to Françoise-Joseph Watteau, nephew of the great painter Antoine Watteau. However, the drawing has since been attributed to Hendrik Pothoven based on similar figure studies by this artist. Known for his arresting and intimate portraits, Pothoven rose to prominence as a society portraitist in Amsterdam. Many of his studies for these finished paintings were executed in white and black chalk on blue paper.
