More Information
Several successive states, or working stages, of this print reveal Rembrandt's quest for balancing light and dark within the composition, particularly in the bold frontal massing of the body. Subtly half-lit features, cast into shadow by the broad-brimmed hat, reveal the sitter's active intellect. De Jonghe (1624/5–1677) was a publisher and print seller in Amsterdam. Rembrandt's likeness contains no overt references to his sitter's profession, but presents him simply as an elegant gentleman.
