Not on viewThe two figures at rest in this calm, subtle work by Lucas van Leyden are religious pilgrims, identifiable by their staffs, sacks, and the scallop shells that adorn their hats. In the Middle Ages, Christians often made pilgrimages to religious epicenters such as Santiago de Compostela. For those who were unable, prints such as this one provided a way of experiencing devotion similar to that felt by pilgrims, within the context of their own homes.
