With this assembly of dancers, Hogarth demonstrates his theory about how the movement and shape of the human form affects our response. The elegant couple at the left represents the ideal of grace, both in movement and in shape. In the diagram at the upper left (fig. 71), they are represented as serpentine lines; the other dancers are rendered as less-than-ideal straight, angular, or rounded forms.
