Trudging home at the end of the day, a line of cows negotiates a rail embankment. The bold horizontal of the track, spanning the entire width of the composition, hints at how trains had interrupted the American landscape, in this case separating fields from farmhouse and outbuildings. Hopper's image is an emblem of the heated conflict between industrial and agrarian priorities that raged during the first decades of the century.
