A founding member of the Photo-Secession movement along with Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Steichen went on to work for Vanity Fair and Vogue, producing many fashion photographs and celebrity portraits. Among Steichen’s many notable subjects are numerous actors of the stage and screen. Katharine Cornell (1893–1974), regarded as one of the greatest American stage actresses of the 20th century and noted for her roles on Broadway, poses here in a dramatic improvisation.
