On viewApfelbaum works with weaving, quilting, ceramics, and materials traditionally associated with craft and domesticity. Growing up surrounded by folk art, Apfelbaum was exposed to art “without any sense of hierarchy or value judgment.” Night-Fall comes from a series made out of repurposed pillow cases and bed sheets originally intended for use as rags in the dying process of her other works. Speaking about the dual marginalization of multidisciplinary women artists and craft, Apfelbaum notes, “Critics need an easy label, and I think many women didn’t have the luxury of just doing one thing.”
