More Information
In this print Hokusai presents a large, arching drum bridge reminiscent of the giant drums used in festivals and rituals. The Kameido Tenjin shrine was celebrated as a meisho, or famous place or scene, for its beautiful wisteria trellises. In this print, the trellises can be seen behind the bridge on the right side of the composition, but the flowers are not yet in bloom. The drum bridge is depicted as though viewed from above and at a diagonal rather than from straight across, giving the scene a sense of depth and spatial expanse.
