Two children appear to float in a bright green shape, the contours of which suggest the tricycles commonly used in the Philippines. Syjuco’s Black Market series consists of images of Filipino markets and consumer goods sourced from the internet. The artist digitally redacts the commodities, turning them into amorphous blobs. Although the term “black market” evokes illegal merchandise, weapons, and human trafficking, it also implies that there is a right and wrong way to sell goods under capitalism. With these voids, the artist questions if it is ever possible to exist outside nefarious, global chains of supply and demand.
