On viewLee was raised in Grand Forks, North Dakota, but now lives and works in Seattle. She returned to the Plains to undertake a series of video portraits in fracking fields during the oil boom of 2012. Against the backdrop of the Great Recession and the erosion of manufacturing jobs, she was struck by the hope workers placed in oil and the way this industry inspired renewed confidence in the American dream of prosperity.
