Cover of Time magazine's June 15, 2020, issue, featuring Titus Kaphar's painting, Analogous Colors

Kaphar painted this TIME magazine cover in response to the nationwide protests following the murder of George Floyd in 2020. As police pinned Floyd to the ground on suspicion of using a counterfeit bill, he cried out for his mother. In the place of a child, Kaphar cut a gaping hole at the center of his canvas. He asks, "How do I explain to my children that the very system set up to protect others could be a threat to our existence? How do I shield them from the psychological impact of knowing that for the rest of our lives we will likely be seen as a threat?"
