Hundertwasser was a painter, architect, and ecological activist, whose architectural projects stress the interconnectedness between people and nature. This work is a critique of high-rise buildings and, as the artist described it, “living far from the ground.” Hundertwasser was inspired by the spirals and arabesques in the art of Viennese Secessionists such as Gustav Klimt, claiming, “The straight line leads to the downfall of humanity.”
