This sculpture is inspired by the artist’s recreation and reimagining of the sacred arts of the African diaspora. Here, a vintage skateboard is topped by two carved ibeji figures, devotional sculptures of Yoruba (Nigerian) origin meant to represent deceased twins. The interlace design on the tongue of each sneaker represents Yoruba concepts of interconnectedness and circularity; the raffia cord links the richly beaded shoes just as the work itself ties together Afro-Atlantic spiritual traditions and references to contemporary Black culture.
