"Out of the red clouds and crimson fog is born the green flower bud, Dawn turns it into a pistil shining with pearlescent pink. A white lotus in mud not large enough to fill a dish plate, Dew enwrapped by petals like feathers in the moonlight. A stone in the turbid water accompanied by a frog’s croak, A 16-meter pond-like square calligraphy paper. Tadpoles swimming freely at the roots of duckweed, The coming year will see the lotus flower spring up from the center of the water.
From A Poem of Chongtai Lotus by Méi Shèngyú of the Song dynasty. Painted three days after the Double Ninth Festival in the year of Gengxu (1970) by the Old Man of Distant Peace, Liú Hǎisù"
