Not on view“Awareness brings action.” This is the rallying cry of a group of Detroit-based artists who call attention to urban decay by painting every abandoned building in the city in “Tiggeriffic Orange,” a color trademarked by the Disney Corporation. (The artists call their project of painting derelict houses Detroit. Demolition. Disneyland.) This bright color makes the buildings insistently visible, and the paint is easily available for purchase, fitting Object Orange’s invitation to Detroit residents to “Take action. Pick up a roller. Pick up a brush. Apply Orange.” Appealing to the public for assistance, Object Orange hopes that the city government will be persuaded to demolish or rebuild these decaying buildings. Although the ultimate objective is to help heal the city’s deep scars, Detroit officials have regarded the artists’ intervention as criminal activity.
