More Information
The Flemish artist Anthony van Dyck served as studio assistant to Peter Paul Rubens and studied extensively in Italy before settling in England in 1632, where he spent the remainder of his life as principal painter to King Charles I. His portrait of Maria Luissa de Tassis, the daughter of a patrician Antwerp family, was painted in 1629 before his departure to London. The virtuoso rendering of sumptuous fabrics, effortless elegance, and decorative splendor of Van Dyck's portrait exemplify the traits that made him a favorite of the European courts.
