Copyright© Estate of Ernest C. WithersMore Information
A Black photojournalist, Withers documented the Civil Rights movement in the 1950s and 60s, forging close relationships with Martin Luther King, Jr., Medgar Evers, and James Meredith. His visual records of the 1955 Montgomery bus boycott and King’s assassination – a march in the aftermath of which is seen here – were often the first, and sometimes the only, photographs to document such seminal events as they unfolded.
