More Information
This large drawing is probably a preliminary sketch for a prospective commission for an altarpiece in the church of Sant'Andrea al Quirinale in Rome. It depicts an episode in the life of Stanislas Kostka (1550-1568), a young Polish nobleman who became the first Jesuit to be beatified; the young man here receives communion from an angel. Ferri lost the commission to Carlo Maratti, then one of the most sought-after artists in the city.
