More Information
Also known as the Mass for the Dead, the Requiem Mass takes its name from the first word of its introit, “Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine,” introduced by the large initial “R” in this leaf. Translated as “Grant them eternal rest, O Lord,” these words began an impassioned mass in which celebrants sought mercy and repose for the faithful departed. In medieval practice, Christians recited the Requiem Mass during funerals and on the November 2 feast of All Souls’ Day. This mass became one of the most frequently revisited medieval chants, famously reworked by illustrious composers such as Mozart.
