Not on viewThis collage by Jean Kondo Weigl serves as a theoretical examination of color and shape. Using a grid as her underlying composition, she cut up colored squares of paper into rounded arch shapes, rearranging them to create a jumbled pattern yet still retaining the underlying grid. While her early work, like this one, was rooted in abstraction, her recent work incorporates more narrative and figural elements.
Born in Berkeley, California, Weigl’s parents were imprisoned during Japanese internment, and she draws on themes of migration and belonging in her work. She is currently based in Oberlin, having received a BA in art from Scripps College in California, an MA in studio art from Oberlin College, and an MFA in painting and drawing from the University of Utah.
