More Information
This dramatic triptych depicts an episode from the warrior epic The Tale of the Heike, a popular story from medieval times (13th-16th centuries), which tells of the struggle between two great 12th-century warrior clans, the Taira and the Minamoto. , The Ghosts of the Slain Taira Warriors Attack Yoshitsune at Daimotsu Bay, illustrates the aftermath of the famous Minamoto naval victory over the Taira. The victorious Yoshitsune is depicted in a boat with his faithful lieutenant Benkei, surrounded by other Minamoto warriors. However, instead of celebrating their victory, they are cringing in horror at the legions of Taira ghost warriors rising out of the waves behind the boat.
