Connor's choice of a narrow vertical format emphasizes the canyon's narrow defile. Bryce Canyon, in southwestern Utah, was designated a national monument in 1923, and a national park in 1928. Among the area's remarkable features are "hoodoos," massive rock pillars and delicate spires carved by erosion.
