More Information
Doughty's landscape is set in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, with Mt. Washington, the tallest peak in the eastern United States, in the distance. The landscape is as much an allegory as a topographic view; the massive boulders obstructing the route to the mountain probably signify an arduous spiritual pilgrimage. Doughty apparently composed his painting from memory, as it is not an exact transcription of the site.
