There is a wonderfully airy, almost diaphanous quality to this painting. The effect is enhanced by the soft, loose brushwork which results in the partially blurred surface. This painting was likely painted outdoors where Boudin loved to work. In his journal, he wrote: "Everything that is painted directly and on the spot always has a strength, a power, a vivacity of touch that cannot be recovered in the studio...three strokes of the brush in front of nature are worth more than two days' work in the studio." While he participated in only the first Impressionist group exhibition in 1874, he continued to have an influence on several of the group's members, particularly Monet.
