Hammerbeck has photographed landscapes of the American West for more than three decades. She is one of several photographers involved in the "Water in the West" project, which uses photography to encourage a deeper consideration of the political and environmental implications of water policy in the western United States. With the explosive growth of urban areas in the Southwest, water resources have become increasingly precious and hotly debated.
