A prolific celebrity portraitist, Steichen focuses here on a musical subject. Albert Spalding (1888-1953) was a renowned American violinist who made his solo debut with the New York Symphony at the age of 20, and played with numerous symphony orchestras worldwide. This photograph demonstrates Steichen’s intimate understanding of light and shadow, which he manipulates to compose highly individualized portraits sensitive to his subjects’ public identities.
