Bridget Riley garnered an international reputation in the 1960s as one of the leading proponents of Op Art, which emphasized optical effects and manipulated sequential geometric patterns to create the illusion of movement. In Elapse, undulating lines of color produce a shimmering effect, suggestive of Riley's interest in Georges Seurat's experiments with optical phenomena.
