Although he worked in other media, including etching and lithography, Lepère was devoted to the elevation of the woodcut from a reproductive method to one of independent aesthetic intent. Taking Japanese woodblock prints as a source of inspiration, he cultivated an expressive idiom for his woodcuts, often using flat color blocks or adding color to create a sense of atmosphere and dynamism for otherwise pedestrian images of daily life.
